The report presents the Board’s findings, conclusions, and recommendations related to activities being undertaken by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to assess the feasibility of deep borehole disposal of some high-level radioactive waste (HLW), including a planned Deep Borehole Field Test to obtain technical information and understanding of critical processes related to deep borehole disposal.
On November 20, 2015, the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board issued two reports: Designing a Process for Selecting a Site for a Deep-Mined, Geologic Repository for High-Level Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel: Overview and Summary, and Designing a Process for Selecting a Site for a Deep-Mined, Geologic Repository for High-Level Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel: Detailed Analysis.
On June 13, 2014, President Barack Obama announced his intent to reappoint the following members of the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board to serve four-year terms: Rodney Ewing, Chairman; Sue Clark; Linda Nozick; Kenneth Peddicord; and Paul Turinsky. All are current members of the Board whose terms expired in April 2014; by law, Board members continue to serve until they are reappointed or until their replacements are appointed by the President.
The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will hold a workshop on Monday, November 18, and Tuesday, November 19, 2013, to identify issues related to how the use of large dry-storage canisters by nuclear utilities for onsite storage will affect future handling, storage, transportation and geologic disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF).
