WHO WE ARE

The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB) is an independent federal agency in the executive branch of the U.S. Federal Government. Its purpose is to perform independent technical and scientific peer review of the U.S. Department of Energy's program for managing and disposing of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.  The Board reports its findings & recommendations to Congress and the Secretary of Energy.

    The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will hold a public meeting in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on Wednesday, June 13, 2018. The meeting will consider technical issues that need to be addressed in developing a large, nationwide effort to transport spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level radioactive waste (HLW).

    Spring 2018 Board Meeting - March 27, 2018

    The U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board will hold a public meeting in the Washington, D.C. area on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. The meeting will consider the issues associated with preclosure operational and performance confirmation monitoring and the retrievability of emplaced high-level radioactive waste (HLW) and spent nuclear fuel (SNF). Technical specialists will discuss technologies for monitoring subsurface seepage, in-drift environmental conditions, and corrosion of waste packages for HLW and SNF.
