Efi Foufoula-GeorgiouDr. Efi Foufoula-Georgiou was appointed to the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board by President Barack Obama on September 25, 2012.

Dr. Efi Foufoula-Georgiou is a Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth System Science and the Henry Samueli Endowed Chair in Engineering at the University of California, Irvine.  From 1989 to 2016, she was on the faculty at the University of Minnesota as a McKnight Distinguished Professor in  the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering, the Joseph T. and Rose S. Ling Chair in Environmental Engineering, and a Founding Fellow of the Institute on the Environment. Her areas of research are hydrology and geomorphology, with special interest on multiscale dynamics and space-time modeling and precipitation of climatic and environmental variables.

Dr. Foufoula-Georgiou served on many national and international advisory boards, including the Water Science and Technology Board of the National Academies, the Advisory Council of the Geosciences Directorate of NSF, and the Earth Sciences Subcommittee of the Science Advisory Council of NASA. She has also been a member of several National Research Council committees, including the committees on "Challenges and Opportunities in the Hydrologic Sciences" and the "Decadal Survey for Earth Observations from Space." She served as president of the Hydrology Section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), chair of the Board of Directors of the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Sciences and as an elected Trustee of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. Dr. Foufoula-Georgiou published over 130 journal - refereed papers and is the recipient of several awards including the John Dalton Medal of the European Geophysical Union, the Hydrologic Sciences Award of AGU, and the Hydrological Sciences Medal of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She is a fellow of AGU, AMS, and AAAS and an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences (2003) and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (2018). 

Dr. Foufoula-Georgiou received a diploma in civil engineering (1979) from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. (1985) in environmental engineering from the University of Florida.

Dr. Foufoula-Georgiou resides in Irvine, California.
