On December 29, 2017, the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board released its Report to Congress and the Secretary of Energy on Management and Disposal of U.S. Department of Energy Spent Nuclear Fuel. The report is based on a Board review of the Department of Energy’s efforts to manage the spent nuclear fuel (SNF) under its control at four federal facilities. The Board finds that it is important to manage the SNF in a way that does not impede its eventual disposal in a geologic repository and to improve the understanding of processes related to potential degradation of the SNF that could affect its future packaging, transportation, and disposal.
